Anne Hathaway shakes off her princess image in incredible “fetish” shoes

It was labelled the Gwyneth effect – super-high heels sold out in shops around the world after the actress was pictured teetering around in one pair after another.

Now even squeaky-clean Anne Hathaway has succumbed, showing up at the Toronto Film Festival in a fetish-style pair of multi-strap PVC black heels.

The Devil Wears Prada star teamed her incredible shoes with a strapless puff dress.

Anne was at the festival to promote her latest movie Rachel Getting Married.

Like Anne, Gwyneth Paltrow was known for her squeaky-clean girl-next-door image, until she stepped out in pair after pair of gravity defying shoes as she promoted her movie Iron Man earlier this year.

Fashion commentators saw her love affair with the kinky footwear evidence that Gwyneth was tired of her earth-mother image and ready to reinvent herself after devoting herself to caring for her two children.

Perhaps 25-year-old Anne, who struck a defiant pose of hands-on-hips, is hoping for a similar image change after the break-up of her long-term relationship with Italian real-estate developer Raffaello Follieri.

They split in June after four years, shortly before he was arrested on fraud and money-laundering charges.

Anne Hathaway may have had troubles in her personal life, but she is flourishing in terms of her professional career.

The 25 year old actress has been nominated along with her castmates from the film Rachel Getting Married for best ensemble performance at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.

Anne Hathaway’s playing Jane by the book

Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway is not surprised that there’s some prejudice against her portraying literary heroine Jane Austen in a movie about her love life.

There have been mumblings on Jane Austen internet blogs suggesting that Brooklyn-born Anne might not have the right sensibilities to play a Regency lady.

Anne, who can be seen in award-winning Brokeback Mountain and starred with Julie Andrews in the Princess Diaries films, begins rehearsals on the film, Becoming Jane, in Dublin next week.

It’s a picture that will explore a romantic relationship Austen had with Tom Lefroy, a young Irish law student, to be played in the film by James McAvoy.

“Not the right sensibilities”

“I know there are a lot of people out there that are horrified that the girl from the Princess Diaries is playing Jane Austen,” Anne told me when we met for a cup of tea in Greenwich Village.

She added matter-of-factly: “I don’t blame them.”

But Anne is passionate about portraying the writer who gave us some of the nation’s best-loved novels, Pride And Prejudice being one of them.

“I love her as much as any of the biggest fans so I don’t want to go in there and mess it up,” she added.

“I’ve been reading her since I was 14 and in reading her, I know who she is. I have a handle on her spirit.”

‘I have a handle on her spirit’

The actress, who studied English literature at Vassar, can already do a pretty good English accent, but has been studying with a dialect coach to improve upon it.

“And I’m learning to play the piano,” she added.

“We always think of Jane Austen as this woman who was a spinster, but she had this love affair which was one of the key relationships in her life.

“It awakened her sexuality and inspired a lot of the relationships she later wrote about in her novels,” Anne told me.

Maggie Smith and Julie Walters are also in the movie, which is being made by Ecosse Films, the company behind the successful Mrs Brown with Judi Dench.

Anne recently finished shooting The Devil Wears Prada, a satire on working at U.S. Vogue magazine, with Meryl Streep.
